Culture in Danger, Extended Version (Culture en Péril, Version Longue, with subtitles)

***IMPORTANT NOTE: To see subtitles, you need to turn the captions “on” by clicking on the arrow button at the bottom right of the screen, then hover over the CC symbol and turn the captions “on”. Thanks.*** This video, originally titled “Culture en Péril (Version Longue)”, was created by a few Québec artists to denounce the cuts in cultural funding by the Conservative governement, led by Stephen Harper. This extended version of the original includes english subtitles. When Beau Dommage’s Michel Rivard visits a newly formed governmental committee overseeing cultural financing, language gaps and cultural misunderstandings abounds, mostly when Rivard plays his classical song, “La Complainte du Phoque en Alaska” (The Complaint of the Seal in Alaska)… ***I received a message about this video from the original creators, so I assume it’s accepted that my subtitled version doesn’t interfere with their intellectual property.*** tupperfan.blogspot.com

    I think we can all agree that Pierre Trudeau opened the borders on immigration and put this country into the mess it is today… but lets keep arguing about movies!

    @MochaShadows

    Franchement, je suis en désaccord. J’applaudis votre français mais la plupart des Canadians ne sont pas intéressé à l’apprendre. En général, le Canada avec ou sans le Québec n’est pas réellement bilingue.

    Je suis persuadé que vous ne noteriez pas beaucoup de différences entre le Canada que vous connaissez maintenant et le Canada sans le Québec.

  • MochaShadows

    Je veux seulement dire qu’il existent des canadiens anglophones qui prennent le temps d’apprendre le français. Je pense que le Québec est une partie essentielle du Canada et j’espère que nous pourrons accepter toutes les cultures qui sont parties du Canada. S’il vous plaît, Québec, ne vous sépare pas! Nous ne serions plus le même pays sans vous…

    The shorter one is better. This one is incredibly ridiculous, whereas the shorter one is just ridiculous enough to be funny.

    @midterm360

    As for the Canadian flag on your backpack when travelling, we’ll see if Canada’s good image is tainted in the future.

    Canada didn’t look too good in recent events such as the Coppenhagen summit and the whole ordeal about the transfered Afghan prisonners.

    Then again, it would probably be difficult for Canada to be hated as much as the US, even if it tried its hardest to be.

    :p

    Cheers

    @midterm360

    I’m aware of those differences, all it takes is for me to watch the I AM CANADIAN Molson Canadian commercial. In it, I believe they simplify it to hockey and saying “eh”.

    That is stereotyping of course but I never felt differences between Canada and the US could be labelled anything else than “regionalisms”. There are differences that exist between provinces and between states but roughly the core culture is the same.

  • midterm360

    @Vineon Peut-être c’est vraie, et merci (au coté :P ), mais le gouvernement du Canada a même passé des lois pour que la français sera protejer.

    Entre les Canadiens est Américains il y a une asser grand différence, pour quoi pensez vous qu’ils suggère de porté un drapeau Canadien aux Américains quand ils vont voyager ailleur dans le monde, CAR IL Y A UN DIFFERENCE!!! Je ne hais pas lies américains n’ont plus, mais juste pour dire, il y a beaucoup de différences s’y vous regardez

    @midterm360

    Dans ce pays supposément “bilingue”, hors Québec, seulement 12% des Canadians sont bilingues fonctionnels (selon Statistics Canada). Cela inclue d’ailleurs tous les Acadiens et Franco-Ontariens.

    Bravo, vous faites dont parti intégrante de cette faible minorité. Vous n’êtes cependant pas du tout représentatif du Canada.

    C’est au niveau identitaire et culturel que je faisais corrélation directe entre les Canadians et les Americans.

    @ThatRandomGuy666
    Actually yes, the british would still have taken over to expand their territorial rights, they just wouldn’t have required wolf at Quebec ^.^
    @ Vineon J’ai besoin de te dire que Le Canada ne saura J’AIMAIS comme les étas unis, le fait que je prend le temp pour vous parlez dans VOTRE langue et preuve de cela

  • thebandnork

    Dear god, this is hilarious!!

  • sweeney139

    This was dang funny and really well done. It did poke gentle fun at we Anglos, but I don’t think in a mean way.

  • ThatRandomGuy666

    @midterm360 Technically speaking, without France settling in Canada, there wouldn’t have been any Canada, just an extension of the 13 colonies to the north. <.<

  • yurihuski

    4:11 you said fuck lol

  • PhilipJFry72

    Vineon? STILL posting your idiocy? You really are fucked in the head, and quite honestly, your theories are still those of someone deserving of being hung from the nearest tree because much like Anne Coulter, no good comes from allowing you to steal Canadian oxygen.

  • Vineon

  • midterm360

    Sorry but Canada wouldn’t be “nothing” without french people it would be missing alot but it WOULD NOT be “nothing”. Si vous parlez pas l’anglais, Le Canada ne serai PAS rien sans les francophone, oui c’est vrai qu’elle aurait manqué quelques aspects sans les francophone, mais pour dire que le Canada serai rien? Vouz êtes FOU.

    I hate “Your” culture.

    J’ai dit ça ironiquement! :)

    Très bonne intervention, bien que quelque peu tardive!

    “Quebec is SCARED that businesses will choose english, that parents will choose english rather than french, that english will become accepted.”
    Replace the word “is SCARED” by “KNOWS”
    Quebec knows, because this is what was going on before Bill 101 was enacted.
    Most signs were in English only, the vast majority of immigrants sent their children to English schools.
    French would be in poor shape by now if nothing had been done to stop this trend. Bill 101 did a lot to save French for a generation.

    I’ve often argued with Americans who hated Hispanics (I’ve studied this question), but at least they were aware of their racism. They wanted them out of their country and they had no moral problem with their hate.
    Read some of your comments here, sir. Then, look at yourself in the mirror. You propagated hate and prejudices for all the world to see.
    Sir, you are a racist.

  • UnspokenRequest

    I’ve probably never come across someone who showed so much hate, so much prejudices toward other peoples on, while being totally unaware of just how racist he actually was.
    You really live in a world of hate and ignorance.
    You stand there attacking an entire society you have very few real knowledge about.

  • UnspokenRequest

    You obviously had very very few contact with Quebec and Quebecers. Your claims are just too outlandish.

    Therefore, I invite you to come to Quebec for a few months. I’m serious about this.

    Your racism and your prejudices are based on a complete ignorance about what Quebec really is. I’d like you to get a dose of reality.

    I’ve got Anglos, Francos and friends from other cultures who could show you around Montreal, Québec city and the regions.

    What is false is the fact that gays can’t get married in Qc.
