Culture in Danger (Culture en Péril, with subtitles)
***IMPORTANT NOTE: To see subtitles, you need to turn the captions “on” by clicking on the arrow button at the bottom right of the screen, then hover over the CC symbol and turn the captions “on”. Thanks.*** This video was created by a few Québec artists to denounce the cuts in cultural funding by the Conservative governement, led by Stephen Harper. This version includes english subtitles. When Beau Dommage’s Michel Rivard visits a newly formed governmental committee overseeing cultural financing, language gaps and cultural misunderstandings abounds, mostly when Rivard plays his classical song, “La Complainte du Phoque en Alaska” (The Complaint of the Seal in Alaska)… ***I received a message from the original creators, so I assume it’s accepted that my subtitled version doesn’t interfere with their intellectual property.*** tupperfan.blogspot.com

@pseudonamed : but do you have a sketch about those cuts to art & culture ? I’d like to see it, to see what it’s saying, the differences in content. (If there is none, then why is it so ?)
I think that the language issue is coming up simply because language issues are that much more important in the context of culture issues. This sketch doesn’t make it obvious, but then, humour rarely works as much when it’s trying to be too obvious.

July 10th, 2010 at 12:04 am
@StuntPlaneBF : you think we do ? you should see what kind of comments the citizens write about Quebeckers in major english newssites such as Globe&Mail and CBC… and then, if it doesn’t convince you that we are nice guys, there is also Don Cherry.
Then “racist” is the new word you can hear all over, from both the extremist pro-multiculturalist who can’t stand anyone else’s opinion, and also from those who are just anti-Quebecker and can’t judge their own attitudes. please consider that.

Fête du Canada! Ça serait le fun de la repasser!

@pseudonamed … Yep, we mock anglophone everyday in Quebec, we are so racism. What are we doing in your country anyway ? Damn, we should get out. Canada is not my country.

Ok, I care about the arts and I am upset at cuts to art & culture, but is this video about supporting the arts, or is it an excuse to mock anglophones? It’s not a french/english issue, they cut funding for everybody, not just francophones. It’s an attack on arts, not on Quebec, and many people outside Quebec are just as upset by it.

False!
In 2008 Quebec tax payers contributed for 20% of all taxes collected in Canada (about 32 billions NET after removing the transfers) wich means you probably would get a tax increase in Canada shortly after… Unless you cut in the military budgets, close some ambassies, ect…. Ontario receives 60% of all transfers in research… and they only contribute 39% of the taxes… The all powerfull ontario a welfare state by youre logic…

Quel Dommage ! Maurice nous dit : “A l’an prochain!”

July 10th, 2010 at 12:04 am
I love this video, its a pretty good representation of the English and French speaking relations in Canada.
As much as we’d like to think that things are fine. It is getting harder and harder to prevent their society from being absorbed and lost forever.
It’s a legitimate problem. And one that still has no clear solution yet. (aside from seperation, which obviously I’m against living in NS)
Honestly though, I favorited this because it’s funny. Thanks for the subtitles!

That would be like an american giggling when they hear an Irish accent.

If anything we co-developed a culture with the northern states.

Actually, in France, they giggle whenever they hear Quebecois French. My colleague, who is from France, thinks it’s funny.
